STORY DESCRIPTION: In her fictional account, “Howling for Home,” author Joan Carris writes a story from a dog’s point of view of finding his way home. Carris’ story reminds dog owners to consider the needs of their animals and, specifically, their need for work, exercise and training. The author wants readers to imagine life-changing experiences from the perspective of a dog she admires, a Bernese puppy named Beau.

CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS
Call to arrange a classroom newspaper presentation by our NIE Director, Michele Terry. Our presentation covers all aspects of publishing a daily newspaper, including how a newspaper is organized, newspaper terminology, fun and interesting facts about the Times-News, and a hands-on NIE activity or craft. It’s the perfect introduction to the newspaper for your students and can be adapted for all grade levels. We also have a 13-minute “video tour” of a newspaper for upper elementary, middle and high school students.

TOURS OF THE TIMES-NEWS
Let your students see how their daily newspaper is published every day. Bring them for a tour where they’ll get to meet some of our reporters and photographers, see how ads are made, and see the gigantic printing press and one-ton rolls of newspaper print! Tours are available for groups of 30 or fewer Monday-Friday. Call 336/506-3071 to schedule your class tour.

AP:  Abbreviation for Associated Press, a wire service (see Wire Service)

Beat:  A particular subject, such as the fire or police department

Byline:  Name of the article (story) writer/author

Circulation:  Number of newspaper copies sold

Column:  Vertical sections of typed lines on a newspaper page.  Also an article that appears regularly in the newspaper (eg. Sports Column)

Copy:  Any kind of written material

Cut:  Newspaper photograph

Cutline:  Explanation under or beside a photograph.  Also called a caption

Dateline:  Where a story happened

Deadline:  Time at which all copy for the edition must be submitted

Editorial:  Article expressing the opinion of an editor

Feature:  A story in which the interest lies in some factor other than news value

Five Ws:  Who, What, Where, When, and Why (sometimes “H” for How is added) – the main questions a reporter asks when following up and writing a story

Flag:  Name of newspaper, as it is printed on the front page

Headline:  Title of a news story

Inverted Pyramid:  The style traditionally used in news stories.  The lead contains the most important facts (who, what, when, where, why and how) in the story, with the other details arranged in descending order

Jumpline:  Line at the bottom of a story listing the page where the story continues

Lead:  First paragraph of a news story containing the most important facts, written to catch the reader’s attention

Managing Editor:  The editor who directs the daily gathering and editing of the news

Masthead:  List of the major executives of the paper, usually printed on the editorial page

Publisher:  The chief executive and often owner of a newspaper

Syndicated Features:  Material such as comics, advice columns, etc. supplied national to newspapers by news syndicates

Wire Service:  Network of reporters and editors who write stories for newspapers; these stories are available electronically to all the subscribing newspapers.  Also referred to as News Service.
